Fantasycon 2027 includes World Fantasy Covention (WFC) 2027, but what does that mean?
HWS (the team behind this event), ran World Fantasy Convention 2025 in Brighton UK, as well as a number of previous Fantasycon events.
The WFC Board felt that it would be better for WFC 2027 to take place outside of the United States and spoke to a number of potential organisers, they reached out on social media and via their own contacts to find a team willing and able to run the event. There were a number of discussions, but sadly these did not result in a viable bid for 2027, although we hope these will be in place for 2028 and beyond.
We offered to assist the Board and include the World Fantasy Awards and some other WFC features into our planned event for 2027. This was accepted by the Board and then announced on social media. This is not intended to be a full WFC event as we know how much preparation that takes.
Fantasycon is a very similar event to World Fantasy Convention. It runs over 3 days (Friday to Sunday) rather than the 4 days of WFC. We have less receptions, such as the Mass Autographing, but we do still have author signings spread throughout the event. Subject wise, we include more Science Fiction rather than just Fantasy and Horror.
Both events have been running since 1975 and so have a long history, I don’t think it is a coincidence that many popular features can be found in both events. Both events have a Banquet and Awards, although in recent years the Fantasycon Banquet and British Fantasy Awards have been on the Saturday night, not Sunday afternoon.
This event will have both the World Fantasy and British Fantasy Awards, it is likely we will keep these as two separate events, with the Banquet and British Fantasy Awards on the Saturday and the World Fantasy Awards on the Sunday.
The event will also have both the British Fantasy Society AGM and the WFC Board Meeting.
